Grandpa Fred used to regale his kin with tall tales of his days growing up, and there is a strong sense family to this complex Syrah. It starts with some estate fruit from Stoney Vine Vineyard in the Rocks and incorporates Birch Creek and Minnick Hills, and the barrel program includes new Wisconsin oak. There’s nice fruitiness on the nose with blackberry and boysenberry, backed by coffee, alder smoke and cigar leaf. The drink is robust and spicy rather than syrupy with dusty brambleberries, red pepper flakes and cracked black pepper. The tannin structure and pleasing acidity makes for a long finish.
