79. Gifford Hirlinger 2010 Estate Petit Verdot, Walla Walla Valley, $38
Of Mike Berghan’s big reds, this may be the boldest from his family’s estate program, yet it’s got the fruit to stand up to the heft. The nose packs in hints of black cherry, Dr Pepper, chocolate and toasted coconut. Inside, there’s density to the cherry, blackberry and dark plums that play well with assertive tannins, which give this enjoyable length. Those who enjoy a brawny Petite Sirah should have no trouble embracing this, which took gold at this year’s Seattle Wine Awards.
