77. Balboa Winery 2010 Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, $34
Owner Tom Glase and vineyard manager Tom Waliser combined for this superb Syrah using grapes from the estate Eidolon Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. It’s a combination of New World and Old World styles that earned best in show at last summer’s inaugural Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition. It opens with classic Côte-Rôtie aromas of sizzling bacon-wrapped venison, cedar, black pepper and blueberry, followed by complex flavors of red currant, plum, black tea, olive and dark chocolate. It’s beautifully balanced and will pair well with a wide variety of dishes.
