Best Buy! Fortunately, Idaho’s largest producer of Pinot Gris is also its best — thanks to Meredith Smith. Her work with this variety native to Burgundy is delicious, and she bumps the fascination in the aromatics by boosting the final blend at 1 percent of Muscat Blanc. There’s no oak involved, and the nose is reminiscent of white peach, dusty Bartlett pear, kiwi fruit and starfruit. On the palate, it’s quite pleasing on the entry with sweet flavors of stone fruit and cantaloupe, but there’s a zippy injection of acidity akin to lemons, limes and kumquat. At 0.8 percent residual sugar, there’s a touch more sweetness than 2012 vintage, but it’s also more delicious, earning a gold at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition. Production increased by 40 percent from the year prior, and the price has reached the level of many Oregon Pinot Gris.
