Former Albertsons executive John Danielson quickly went from making wine in his garage to creating some of Idaho’s best red wines in 2008 and earning Wine Press Northwest’s Winery to Watch Award five years later. These wines are receiving better exposure now with Hat Ranch vintner Tim Harless having taken over the brand, and this Syrah from a cool vintage offers aromas of smoky bacon, toast, gun metal, black plum and boysenberry. The entry is round and plush with more black fruit as President plum and blueberry skin tannins lead to a smooth finish. Harless presents the Vale wines at his Hat Ranch Winery tasting room in the Sunnyslope Wine District west of Caldwell.
