60. Plain Cellars 2012 Petite Sirah, Yakima Valley, $30
This small producer in North Central Washington turned our heads all year long with one delicious wine after another. This superb Petite Sirah using Yakima Valley grapes is not an overwhelmingly big red like so many wines made from this robust grape. It opens with aromas of sweet smokiness, plum and black pepper, followed by flavors of mocha, blackberry and black olive. It’s backed by moderate tannins that add a hint of dark chocolate to the lengthy and beautifully balanced finish.
