Rocky Pond Winery 2014 Clos Chevalle Vineyard Viognier, Lake Chelan, $23
This site on the south shore of Lake Chelan turned a decade old with this vintage of Viognier made by Prosser’s Ron Bunnell. His expression with this white Rhône variety shows an inviting nose of lemon-lime, dried pineapple and papaya with baked pear and cinnamon dust in the background. There’s more citrus on the entry, followed by roundness of pear butter, Gala apple peel and grapefruit juice in the finish. This would be ideal with the winery’s recipe for Spicy Spanish Shrimp and Mango Skewers. Its small production means this estate Viognier is limited to sales through the winery in Orondo, the Woodinville tasting room which opens Feb. 20, and online.

Recently, I’ve had a Thurston Wolfe Viognier and Pinot Gris blend that was spectacular! We’re growing both varietals here at Olalla Vineyard & Winery and we’re going to try that blend as well. Our Viognier does well here in Western Washington.

Coyote Canyon and Martinez Martinez in Prosser have always had delightful Viogniers for me.
