Chateau Ste. Michelle 2014 Limited Release Viognier, Columbia Valley, $24
A year ago, Kara Koh took more of a leadership role on Bob Bertheau’s white winemaking team in Woodinville, and this limited release project with Viognier shows style. Fruity aromas of Squirt soda, orange and white peach also pick up hints of lemongrass, toasted marshmallow and cardamom – signs of 20 percent of the lot spending five months on the lees in neutral oak. Flavors turn to Gala apple, nectarine and white peach, backed by a long trickle of orange acidity. Grapefruit pith in the finish adds complexity and length rather than bitterness.
Rating: Excellent

Recently, I’ve had a Thurston Wolfe Viognier and Pinot Gris blend that was spectacular! We’re growing both varietals here at Olalla Vineyard & Winery and we’re going to try that blend as well. Our Viognier does well here in Western Washington.

Coyote Canyon and Martinez Martinez in Prosser have always had delightful Viogniers for me.
