Schultz Wines 2012 Steelhead Run Vineyard Mission Viognier, Rogue Valley, $17
The Schultz family sources from Salmon-Safe Steelhead Run Vineyard and works with Linda Donovan of Pallet Wine Co., in Medford, Ore., to produce this reserve-style Viognier that spent 17 months on the lees in neutral French oak barrels. It results in an oaky and buttery style reminiscent of some high-end Chardonnays from Sonoma. Notes of stone fruit, citrus, cardamom and hazelnut make their way through as the pleasing mouth feel finishes with minerality and a snappy finish of lime. Suggested pairings include Crustless Spinach Quiche and spicy fare. The wines are available at the family’s farm stand in Grants Pass on Slagle Creek Road, retailers in Southern Oregon and via the website.

Recently, I’ve had a Thurston Wolfe Viognier and Pinot Gris blend that was spectacular! We’re growing both varietals here at Olalla Vineyard & Winery and we’re going to try that blend as well. Our Viognier does well here in Western Washington.

Coyote Canyon and Martinez Martinez in Prosser have always had delightful Viogniers for me.
