Luisa Ponzi showcases the historically early-ripening vintage and some of family’s cherished relationships with growers with the follow-up release of the 11-vineyard melange she refers to as Classico. Three estate plantings, Aurora, Avellana and Madrona, are joined by well-known vineyards such as Lazy River and Wahle, sources the Ponzis have worked with for 15 years. While it spent just 11 months in barrel, more than a third of those nearly 300 barrels were new French oak. And yet, it’s fruit-forward with weight and concentration, loaded from start to finish with blueberry, black cherry and dusty raspberry notes. Touches of lavender, chai spices and cranberry acidity add to its complex structure. Also noteworthy is that this screwcapped offering is available as a 375-milliliter “split” bottle.
