Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2009 Cherry Street, Columbia Valley, $17
Two years ago, Precept Wine brought this brand back under Northwest control by purchasing it from Diageo and maintained some of this proud label’s traditions. That includes keeping this robust blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (43%), Merlot (42%) and Zinfandel named for the street where the tasting room remains. It’s an oak lover’s delight from beginning to end, starting with its nose of bittersweet chocolate backed by Dr Pepper, spicy plum, orange peel and mint. There’s much more fruit on the palate, which features flavors of black currant, black cherry and raspberry, followed by more chocolate, coffee, black licorice and soy sauce. Burly tannins and a marvelous black olive character should serve this well with braised elk spare ribs or other grilled meats.
