For the second straight vintage, this Carlton, Ore., winemaker pulls down our top rating for his work with Primitivo from Washington. The nose is loaded with blackberry, black currant and milk chocolate aromas, and there’s delicious assertion of the same fruit on the palate. There’s a backing of Western serviceberry chalkiness with blueberry skin tannins, and that balanced structure makes it a great food wine. The finish allows for some hedonism with coffee and cocoa powder.
