Locati Cellars 2009 Innovation, Columbia Valley, $20
Locati Cellars, whose estate grapes are grown about 15 minutes south of downtown Walla Walla along the Washington-Oregon border, is one of six wineries with a tasting room inside the Marcus Whitman Hotel. This is Locati’s delicious interpretation of a “Super Tuscan” style of red blend. It leads with 50% Sangiovese from Mission Hills vineyard in Walla Walla, followed by equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon from Goose Ridge and Barbera from Lonesome Spring Ranch. It opens with elegant aromas of cherry, cedar and spice. Its distinctive flavors of dark fruit, chocolate and coffee are deep and intense with superb clarity. It’s a delicious wine to enjoy with lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs or cannelloni. This won a gold medal at the Great Northwest Wine Competition.
