Native Sun 2009 Petit Verdot, Red Mountain, $50
By Great Northwest Wine on June 7, 2013
Kyle Johnson, winemaker for the now-defunct Olsen Estate, now has his own gig with Purple Star and Native Sun. Johnson used grapes from the pioneering Kiona Vineyards on Red Mountain for this delicious but rarely made 100% Petit Verdot. It opens with aromas of chocolate, black licorice, walnut and black cherry. On the palate, it offers flavors of chocolate-covered blueberry, black raspberry and boysenberry, all backed with rich tannins. It’s a big, mouth-filling wine.
