YAKIMA, Wash. – A Walla Walla Valley red blend was the best wine at the 32nd annual Washington State Wine Competition, held last week at the Central Washington State Fairgrounds.
Saviah Cellars‘ 2009 Big Sky Cuvee, a classic Bordeaux-style blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, was crafted by owner/winemaker Richard Funk. He named after the nickname for Montana, his home state. The wine also won best red wine.
Array Cellars in Seattle won best white wine for its Chardonnay – a wine from just the second vintage for Array.
Ryan Patrick Vineyards’ 2010 Reserve Cab won best Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery is owned by Milbrandt Vineyards in Mattawa.
Barnard Griffin in Richland won best Merlot for its 2010 Merlot. Ridge Crest – a second label for Claar Cellars north of Pasco – won best Syrah.

You wrote: “The winery is owned by Milbrandt Vineyards of Mattawa.” Ryan-Patrick Vineyards is owned by the Wahluke Wine Co. of Mattawa. The Milbrandt family, Jerry and Butch specifically, own the Milbrandt Winery and the Wahluke Wine Co.
