Smasne Cellars 2011 The Pioneer, Washington, $32
By Great Northwest Wine on June 29, 2013
Owner/winemaker Robert Smasne has crafted a delicious fortified dessert wine using classic Portugese varieties. This wine includes Souzou (38%), Tinta Madeira (32%), Tinta Cao (18%) and Touriga Nacional, and it is named to honor the pioneer winemakers of the Washington wine industry, whose earliest efforts were fortified wines. This opens with aromas of ripe blueberry and vanilla bean, followed by flavors of plum, golden raisin, black licorice and deep cherry notes. The additional alcohol is well integrated, and this is a rich, smooth wine.
