Chateau Ste. Michelle 2009 Limited Release Boreal, Columbia Valley, $35
Members of Chateau Ste. Michelle’s wine club get first crack at the “Limited Release” program, and membership brings benefits. Josh Maloney, who since moved joined the Wahluke Wine Co., made this in a Northern Rhône style, the Syrah (95%) from the Wahluke Slope was co-fermented with Viognier, then barrel-aged in neutral oak for 15 months. There’s plenty of spice in the nose, starting with Red Hots candy and vanilla, but there’s lots of blueberry, plum, chocolate and tar, too. The palate brings a jamminess with that fruit, along with more tar, some Worcestershire and cinnamon in the finish. Suggested fare includes filet mignon, herb-roasted rack of lamb and dark chocolate.
Rating: Excellent
Production: 603 cases
