Leone Italian Cellars 2006 Miscela Rossa, Columbia Valley, $28
Silver Lake winemaker William Ammons oversees this rather fascinating program for Washington Wine and Beverage Co., in Woodinville. This release is a Super Tuscan-style blend of Sangiovese (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (22%), Merlot (22%) and Cabernet Franc from Walla Walla Valley vineyards, with the Italian variety from what is now Blue Mountain Vineyard (formerly Neuffer). It was five years before the wine went into bottle, which explains the dried cherry, cassis and cigar leaf aromas. There’s a definite dustiness on the palate with black cherry and plum flavors, backed by a wealth of tannin and acidity. Suggested pairings include Chicken Cacciatore or pasta served with butternut squash and sage.
