Gecko Cellars 2012 Barbera Rosé, Wahluke Slope, $15
Best Buy! Technically, the parent firm of Michael Florentino Cellars in Woodinville, Wash., is Gecko Wine Co., and Bradley Sherman created the Gecko Cellars brand to produce value wines under the shadow of the Great Recession. He’s joined the growing number of Washington winemakers to embrace Italian varieties for use in rose-style wines. Its the color of salmon in the glass and opens with aromas of blood orange, strawberry, apricot and fresh caramel. There’s a theme of cherry and strawberry to the flavors, and while there’s some sweetness, there’s lots of frothy acidity to make it a pleasant sipper that’s finished with hints of Jolly Rancher watermelon candy and strawberry-rhubarb compote.
