Daven Lore Winery 2011 Durif, Horse Heaven Hills, $28
Prosser winemaker Gordon Taylor continues to pay tribute to François Durif, the French botanist credited with nurturing the variety that is more widely called Petite Sirah — a 19th century cross with Syrah and Peloursin. Wines made with these massive clusters typically are not for the faint of heart, and this is a bit of an iron fist in a velvet clove. Hedonistic aromas cast out hints of dark plums, chocolate-covered cherries and toast. Inside, it’s rich, dark and intense, building with plums, black currants and red cherries. Fans and members of the P.S. I Love You group will appreciate this as a reasonably tame version — and excellent for introductory purposes.
