Smasne Cellars 2010 Phinny Hill Vineyard Carménère, Horse Heaven Hills, $38
By Great Northwest Wine on November 4, 2013
The vineyards in Dick Beightol’s neighborhood produce marvelous wines from Bordeaux varieties, and he’s become one of the Northwest’s top growers of this lesser-known grape. In the hands of Robert Smasne, it shows classic aromas of black pepper, dark plum, blackberry fruit leather, blueberry juice and tumeric. The drink is far from shy as it continues with the black pepper, plum and dark cherry approach. Blueberry acidity, enjoyable slaty tannins and black olive notes provide length. Enjoy with venison, lamb or meatloaf.
