It took a trip to Tuscany and negotiations involving limoncello with a cross-town vintner before Gordon Taylor could get these grapes from affable Arthur denHoed. This vintage marks the debut of a vineyard-designated Mourvédre for Daven Lore, which opens with whiffs of blackberry and blueberry, backed by almond butter, porcini mushroom in moist earth and the variety’s tell-tale cracked white pepper. The juice carries a theme of black cherry and plum with food-friendly acidity akin to elderberry and blueberry. Tannins get tucked into the background, along with a pinch of oregano. Suggested fare includes cassoulet, coq au vin, rack of lamb or pepper steak.
