Ron Helbig makes wine within Oregon’s Yamhill-Carlton appellation, but he relies on Washington to grow the grapes for his big reds. Heady aromas of plum, black cherry, chocolate-raspberry sauce, brown sugar, espresso and savory herbs set the stage for a bold drink of cherries and cassis. The cocoa powder tannin structure rubs on the roof of the palate, there’s acidity to age and added complexity of cola and mint in the finish. These wines now are available on Amazon.
