Westport Winery 2011 Jones Vineyard Swimmer Petite Sirah, Wahluke Slope, $27
As usual, there’s a good story behind the tasty wine by Washington State University grad Dana Roberts, only this time, he’s on the label wearing a Speedo. The photo was taken about 20 years before he became an award-winning winemaker. His work with Greg Jones Vineyard, the Quincy family’s Unit 10 site, shows a deft touch with this burly variety. It’s nose-filling and dense with black fruit notes of plum, blackberry, black cherry, joined by Aussie-style black licorice, blueberry taffy, black pepper and graphite. Inside, there’s a staunch but not aggressive approach of tannin with that core of dark fruit, making for a rich Petite Sirah that’s finished with chocolate-covered pomegranate.
