Northwest Cellars 2009 Verhey Vineyard Syrah, Yakima Valley, $32
By Great Northwest Wine on December 12, 2013
Kirkland, Wash., vintner Robert Delf works with Yakima Valley native winemaker Robert Smasne to produce a vineyard-designate Syrah from this fairly young site in the Rattlesnake Hills near Union Gap. There’s a constant thread of boysenberry, president plum, sarsaparilla and cedar throughout this purple-toned wine that’s finished with mint and spicy black pepper. Look for this Syrah at your favorite wine merchant because it sold out quickly at the winery, but Delf recently expanded his dedication to Verhey by adding a vineyard-designate 2010 Malbec.
