Corliss Estates 2008 Red Wine, Columbia Valley, $65
Nothing gets rushed at Corliss Estates in Walla Walla, and this Meritage-style blend exemplifies that. The five traditional red Bordeaux varieties were barrel-aged in 70% new French oak for 2 1/2 years before spending two years in bottle prior to release. That regimen explains the wine’s classic and refined approach, starting with heady aromas of dusty cherry, dark plum, Baker’s chocolate, allspice and coconut. There’s a boldness to the flavors of Bing cherries and dark chocolate, backed by tobacco leaf, cracked black pepper and sandy tannins.
