85. Avennia 2011 Boushey Vineyard Arnaut Syrah, Yakima Valley, $48

avennia-wine-arnaut-bottleChris Peterson worked alongside one of Yakima Valley’s biggest proponents when he taught classes in Walla Walla with the late Stan Clarke, and here he works with one of the region’s top vineyards. In order for a more true expression of the site, the approach was restrained with native yeast, 15% new French oak and unfiltered. The nose conjures up complex hints of black plum, boysenberry, and black cherry along with secondary aromas of maple syrup, root beer candy, charcoal and cherry tomato. There’s remarkable balance to the rich drink of blackberry and dark raspberry, backed by black pepper and pleasing length.
