Smasne Cellars 2010 Phinny Hill Vineyard Carménère, Horse Heaven Hills, $38
By Great Northwest Wine on January 12, 2014
Some of Walla Walla’s top wineries tap into Dick Beightol’s vineyard for Bordeaux varieties, and Yakima Valley winemaker Robert Smasne has been sourcing in this high-rent neighborhood of the Horse Heaven Hills for years. Cabernet Franc on steroids in terms of the crushed leaf tones with this Carménère, backed by fruity hints of boysenberry and cherry. Its structure brings along great acidity and taut tannins, making this suitable with London Broil or homemade meatloaf.
