Valley View Winery 2008 Anna Maria Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Rogue Valley, $28
The Wisnovsky family moved to Jacksonville, Ore., began planting vines in 1972, and soon launched the Rogue Valley’s first bonded winery since Prohibition. The Anna Maria tier denotes their top wines, and longtime winemaker John Guerrero turned this dessert offering into one brothers Mark and Michael Wisnovsky should be proud of. Grapes are frozen after harvest, then pressed and barreled two years in new French oak. The oaky tones give initially give it a nose similar to a white Port until apple pie, honeycomb and canned pear aromas take over. A sip brings a beautiful entry of agave nectar, baked apple and vanilla, backed by pineapple and peach. Ample acidity balances the residual sugar of 17%.
