Schmidt Family Vineyards 2012 Riesling, Southern Oregon, $22
By Great Northwest Wine on January 15, 2014
Carpenter Hill Vineyard in Medford, Ore., once had been a pear orchard, and there’s an abundance of pear and apple in the aromas and flavors of bone-dry Riesling by Cal & Judy Schmidt in Grants Pass. There’s a sandy texture to the yellow grapefruit finish, and the Schmidts suggest pairing their Riesling with lighter-style dishes that feature coriander, which is why they included an artist’s drawing of coriander on the label of this bottling. This wine received a silver medal in the Riesling less than 1.49% residual sugar class at the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
