Three years ago, Boyd and Karen Buckingham launched their Sammamish, Wash., winery after being at part of Rock Meadow Cellars for the better part of a decade, which introduced them to some of the better growers in the state. Todd Newhouse of Upland Vineyard on Snipes Mountain ranks among them, and he supplied this lot of the Spanish variety. There’s a reward of spice in the nose with pepper, vanilla and ground mustard, backed by raspberry and elderberry. Inside, it’s full of bright acidity with flavors of Montmorency cherry, raspberry and tobacco leaf, while the Buckinghams have managed to tame the tannins inherent in the variety. They suggest pairing it with paella, grilled lamb skewers, garlic prawns and broiled salmon. A portion of the sales go to The WAVE Foundation benefiting domestic violence organizations and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Their wines are offered at several locations, including Vino Bella Wine & Espresso Bar in Issaquah and the Fall City Bistro.
