Westport Winery 2011 Jetty Cat Red, Columbia Valley, $27
The previous vintage of Dana Roberts’ black cat wine picked up a gold medal at the 2013 Seattle Wine Awards, and his latest release is even better. He took bold varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo, paired them with silky Syrah and added high-acid Sangiovese to create an ebullient drink. The inky approach shows off the Syrah, and the nose is filled with plum jam, blueberry and Whoppers. There’s a theme of purple fruit across the creamy palate with blueberry, plums and boysenberry. Dr Pepper, silky chocolate, plum skins and Earl Grey tea finish off the presentation of berries. A portion of this wine’s sales are donated to the Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals.
