Angel Vine 2011 Avery Vineyard Zinfandel, Columbia Valley, $20
By Great Northwest Wine on January 31, 2014
The grape-growing Gunkel family near Maryhill Winery operates along Avery Road, hence the name for one of their vineyards. Winemaker Ed Fus in Carlton, Ore., brought these Zinfandel grapes in Oct. 15, and the nose is reminiscent of black cherry, black pepper, pipe tobacco and toasted oak. The drink is bright and straightforward with dried strawberry, Montmorency cherry and pomegranate with cherry-skin tannins.
