Claar Cellars 2010 White Bluffs Syrah, Columbia Valley, $23
Joe Hudon, a graduate of Washington State University and product of the University of Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, took over at Claar Cellars in time to run the 2010 crush, and his first Syrah at the Pasco, Wash., winery recently earned a gold medal in its price point at the 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. It also may be a reflection of his Aussie eduction — a master’s degree from the University of Adelaide. Aromas from the Claar-Whitelach family’s estate vineyard hint at boysenberry, Western serviceberry and minerality. The flavors show a fascinating combination of gaminess and brilliant acidity with Marionberry, pomegranate and Olympic Provisions bacon. Look for this wine to be released at the Claar Cellars tasting room in Zillah starting in June.
