Eleven Winery 2011 Sugarloaf Vineyard Mourvèdre, Yakima Valley, $35
By Great Northwest Wine on February 10, 2014
Bainbridge Island winemaker Matt Albee has found a sweet spot for Rhône varieties in Washington’s Rattlesnake Hills with grower Joe Hattrup, and this marks the second consecutive vintage for Albee to earn our top rating for his Mourvèdre off Sugarloaf. Its smoky nose gathers up hints of black plum, pomegranate, white pepper, mahogany and minerality. On the palate, it screams with President plum, Marionberry and red cherry while the structure dances with acidity and well-framed tannins. Albee doubled production of this in 2011, which means there’s more available at his tasting rooms on the island and across the Agate Pass Bridge in Poulsbo.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 171 cases
Alcohol: 13.5%
