Kiona Vineyards 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington, $25
The label is misleading because this is 100% Red Mountain from the Williams family’s Kiona Estate and the younger Heart of the Hills site. However, it does teeter on edge of a street-legal Cab with its healthy additions of Cabernet Franc (20%) and Petit Verdot (5%). That PV piece contributes remarkable dark purple fruit tones, starting with aromas that hint at plums, black cherry, chocolate and fresh popcorn. The drink is remarkable, entering akin to a rich and dark Syrah with that purple fruit, then the power of Red Mountain shows with bold plum-skin tannins and ageworthy acidity. There’s understandable excitement within the family for this wine because it showcases Heart of the Hill’s Clone 2 Cab and the Petit Verdot. And it also won a gold medal at the 2014 Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Competition.
