Castillo de Feliciana Vineyard and Winery 2010 Phinny Hill Vineyard Malbec, Horse Heaven Hills, $38
Many of the acclaimed Cabs produced in Washington come from the Horse Heaven Hills, so it makes sense that Malbec also is finding a home there. Phinny Hill Vineyard owner Dick Beightol knows this region as well as anyone, and his fruit excelled in the hands of Walla Walla Valley winemaker Christopher Castillo. Elegant oak — 73 percent new French barrels — leads to aromas of blackberry and dark plum with violets, molasses and brown sugar. Rich blackberries and blueberries burst in the mouth to create a delicious texture of great acidity, chocolaty tannins and finished with plumminess. Look for this wine, which received a silver medal in the Seattle Wine & Food Experience Wine Competition, at their tasting rooms in Woodinville and in Milton-Freewater, Ore., at the family’s estate.
