Maryhill Winery 2009 Sangiovese, Columbia Valley, $16
By Great Northwest Wine on March 2, 2014
Kiwi-born winemaker Richard Batchelor arrived from the Napa Valley not long before crush began in 2009 at this destination winery along the Columbia River, and he’s producing 80,000 cases in Goldendale, Wash. His first bottling of this Italian variety for the Leutholds is showing aromas of dusty cherry, anise, sandalwood and toast. Those lead into a bright entry of cranberries and milk chocolate, backed by easy tannins, light acidity and allspice.
