Maryhill Winery 2008 Vintage Port, Columbia Valley, $20
Gunkel Vineyard, a cornerstone estate site along the Washington side of the Columbia River near Maryhill, has little difficulty getting these Iberian varieties — Tempranillo, Tinta Cão, Touriga Naçional and Souzão — ripe enough for this Port-style bottling. The results half a decade later bring hints of black currant, pomegranate, raisin, smoky bacon and cedar, followed by flavors of bittersweet chocolate, Chukar Cherry and golden raisin. The rich entry pushes through to the lengthy finish of molasses, where the residual sugar of 7% and managed alcohol meet. Enjoy with Stilton cheese and filberts. This earned a silver medal at the Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Competition.
