Boomtown By Dusted Valley 2012 Merlot, Washington, $16
The Wisconsin wizards at Dusted Valley Vintners have made good on their goal to increase their presence with this brand, a partnership with the Milbrandt brothers’ Wahluke Wine Co., that now stands at 20,000 cases among five varieties. And they also are comfortable linking this label to DVV, as evidenced by the refreshed logo. Their Merlot is a remarkably fruit-forward, starting with the nose of black cherry juice, sweet plum and cigar box. On the pour, it’s more of the same with enjoyable viscosity and dabs of sweet blueberry and molasses that build the midpalate. It’s hedonistic in the finish as milk chocolate tannins fill in, and it will play nicely as a pre-function pour.
