Bunnell Family Cellar 2008 Syrah, Horse Heaven Hills, $40
Few in the Pacific Northwest can match Ron Bunnell’s skill with Syrah, and the gold medal for this bottling entering into the 2014 Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Competition adds another superlative to his acclaim. The nose is filled with dark plum, boysenberry and bittersweet chocolate, followed by slight hints of gaminess, beet juice, green olive and the flecks of minerality often found in Horse Heaven Hills fruit. There’s incredible depth to the drink, which is loaded with a rich entry of blackberry sauce, chocolate and more plum. It then bursts with acidity of Marionberry and pomegranate before its lengthy finish brings in a whisper of bacon fat.
