Mercer Canyons 2011 Red Blend, Columbia Valley, $17
Mercer Estates launched this second label with the 2009 vintage, and their Red Blend with cattle on the bottle continues to steer toward Merlot (81%), with support from Cabernet Sauvignon (9%), Petit Verdot (4%), Carménère (3%), Grenache (2%) and Malbec. The inviting nose comes with hints of red currant and red cherry backed by notes of plum, milk chocolate, rosewood, graphite, tarragon and churros dusted with cinnamon. It is a lively drink of high-toned red fruit such as cherry, currant and pomegranate that makes a nice transition to late chewy tannins within a medium structure. Enjoy this screwcapped release with tomato-based stews, pasta and pork ribs.
