Longtime Walla Walla Valley educator Doug Simmons produces small lots in his winery near the Walla Walla Regional Airport, and he focuses on Les Collines Vineyard for his Merlot. It offers aromas of fresh plum juice, dusty Rainier cherry, dried strawberry and black walnut. The smooth drink brings red currant and cherries with approachable tannins and a finish of black olive and walnut. This received at gold medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition.
