Dan Ferris and his wife, Deana, began making small lots of fruit wine as a hobby while operating a popular smokehouse business in Tenino, Wash. In 2012, they launched Mill Lane Winery south of the state capital, and they continue to offer their meats and cheeses. Dan’s expression of raspberries includes aromas of cranberry, hibiscus tea, rose hips and cinnamon stick. There’s a match on the palate, where there’s an added note of Van cherry. Adequate acidity balances the residual sugar (4%), and a bit of tannin adds to the complexity. It netted a silver medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
