This remarkable site overlooking Royal City in Washington’s Frenchman Hills has worked with Walla Walla’s Chuck Reininger on this Italian variety for several vintages. Sangiovese clone 19 and clone 23, the later of which has been traced to Romanga, combine to create aromas of black raspberry with underbrush, backed by strawberry, graphite and smoky molasses. Its flavor profile brings ripe brambleberries along with high-toned red fruit of red currant and pie cherry, mineralty and chocolate. Just as important, the food-friendly acid profile pushes the friendly tannins into the background. Suggested fare includes duck, pork, sausage, venison and dishes featuring Parmesan cheese, tomatoes and basil. Additional possibilities include sauces incorporating cherries, figs, plums and raspberries.
