Vino Aquino 2012 Paradise White Wine, Washington, $13
Best Buy! Rich Aquino has operated a home winemaking shop in Tacoma since the summer of 2001, and he’s developed a professional wine program using kits he’s been selling to amateurs. His presentation of Chardonnay incorporates apricots and peaches, which explains aromas of poached pear and Henry Weinhard’s Orange Cream Soda, joined by hints of baked apple, spun sugar and Honeycomb cereal. The palate picks up flavors of fresh pear along with peach and apricot. It’s off-dry at 4% residual sugar, but the presentation is clean and makes for a rather delicious porch-pounder. This received a silver medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
