Sovereign Cellars 2011 Syrah, Red Mountain, $30
By Great Northwest Wine on April 22, 2014
Dennis Gross, a former chemistry teacher, founded his winery a decade ago in Olympia, and he’s dedicated to tiny lots from some of Washington’s top regions. His suave Syrah opens with aromas of blackberry syrup, bacon fat, chocolate, black licorice and allspice. Inside, it’s loaded with black raspberry and dark plum flavors, and while there is some of the power often prevalent in Red Mountain reds, there’s balance and length with the fruit and acidity. This earned a gold medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
