Sleeping Dog Wines 2012 Sweet Aurora, Yakima Valley, $18
This dessert-style bottling is one of the signature wines from this Benton City, Wash., winery, and the fruit source for this Sauvignon Blanc is just across the dusty driveway at Buoy Vineyard. It was harvested at 28 Brix and ended up at 5.5% residual sugar, making for aromas of peach cobbler, baked apple, gooseberry and grassiness. Expect a gratifying entry of bright pear and sweet apricot on the palate, followed by baked apple with cinnamon. There’s enough acidity to steer it away from being cloying, and suggested pairings include spicy foods, smoked fish and a plate of fresh fruit and cheese. This earned a silver medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
