Garofalo Family Winery 2011 Les Collines Vineyard Merlot, Walla Walla Valley, $20
By Great Northwest Wine on May 7, 2014
One of Washington’s stalwart vineyards, wineries large and small seek fruit from this McKibben family operation at the base of the Blue Mountains. Chad Garofalo, a new winemaker in nearby Milton-Freewater, Ore., turned his lot into a nose of cherry jam, loganberry, Swisher Sweet cigar, bell pepper and orange peel. A nice load of cherries gets dropped on the palate, which is joined by good acidity, a late rush of tannin and a finish of Smith Brothers Wild Cherry drops.
