Barking Frog Winery 2012 Estate Chardonnay, Chehalem Mountains, $25
A historic vintage and 20-year-old vines of Chardonnay clone 76 and 96 inspired Carlton, Ore., winemaker Ron Helbig to make his first white wine for Barking Frog. The vessel was a new single Alain Fouquet barrel with medium-plus toast. That influence of oak does not overwhelm as aromas lean toward ripe Asian pear, Golden Delicious apple and pineapple, backed by a hint of Spanish almonds. The drink seems to fit the trend of Chardonnay in Oregon with its focus on fascinating layers of orchard fruit, tethered with penetrating acidity and hints of minerality. The finishing touch is the glass Vino-Lok that sits atop most Barking Frog bottles. This wine is limited to tasting room sales.
